Cooking with food intolerances

Corn-free Baking Powder January 10, 2011

Filed under: Substitution — Kathy Brown @ 5:21 pm

Most commercial baking powders have corn in them, in the form of  cornstarch. Since my daughter, and son, and I can’t have corn due to intolerance, and the only other baking powder I found had potato starch in it, and my son can’t have potatoes due to intolerance, I make my own.

It’s just equal parts of baking soda PLUS Cream of Tartar PLUS tapioca or sweet potato starch. I mix up about half a cup at a time so that I always have it on hand when we need to do a little baking.
